Sandrock House Story
Howdy, I’m Philippa, a Surrey-based interior designer with an immense passion for thought-provoking design and interior styling. My dark signature style is reflected in my flair for sourcing eclectic, dramatic furniture, homewares and lighting for Sandrock House, my independent interiors and concept store on Dorking’s historic West Street.
I firmly believe our home environment has a significant impact on our daily lives. Considered interior design has the power to make spaces compelling, elevate our experiences and improve our homelife and functionality. I adore helping my clients choose from my extensive collection of statement lighting, mirrors, seating, storage and decorative pieces to satisfy their appreciation for design and quality craftsmanship.
HOW IT STARTED
There’s no doubt I’ve always been slightly bonkers about interior design. It lights a fire in me like nothing else! My degree in interior architecture provided a strong foundation but for me, taking on the complete renovation of two period houses has played a huge part in defining and developing my personal style.
If you’re reading this having already stumbled across my Instagram account @sandrockhouse, you might know I originally started it to document the extensive renovations of our eponymous Victorian family home, Sandrock. Amazingly, this led me to winning the UK Interior Award 2019 for Best Use of Dark Decor and again in 2020 for Best Eye for Interiors. Sandrock itself then went on to be featured in several top interiors magazines including The Ideal Home, 25 Beautiful Homes and Surrey Life.
ABOUT MY STYLE
My interiors style is dark and dramatic – think industrial grit with touches of glamour. Yet for me, successful styling is all about achieving a cohesive tonal balance too; adding pattern, pops of colour, textural layers and atmospheric lighting as the finishing touch.
My passion for discovering the unique and inspiring allows Sandrock House’s ever-changing collection of carefully curated pieces and statement accessories to constantly evolve, augmenting the style of my clients’ homes.
I loved it when my Instagram followers often asked me for styling advice or where I sourced the unusual pieces for my home. So in December 2020 I was inspired to take an exciting leap of faith, starting Sandrock House, a concept store based on my signature style.
Now, clients can view my collection instore or here on the website, and I’m proud to have successfully established Sandrock House as a leading interiors destination in Surrey.
Sandrock House meets this wild house
In June 2021, I joined forces with my business partner in crime, Rebecca Black; a likeminded interior design obsessive and founder of her own unique interiors and lifestyle brand; This Wild House.
Our mutual love of statement, one-off interior pieces has grown into a beautiful partnership, drawing upon our passion for sourcing and styling unique finds with flair and imagination. Rebecca’s signature style reflects her love of mid-century design, tribal influences and a touch of glamour, seamlessly complimenting the dark, eclectic style of Sandrock House.
Pop by and you will likely find us excitedly hustling our unique finds into the store or styling our ever-changing collection of enticing lighting, furniture and homewares to inspire our clients and augment their homes.
FAMILY LIFE
I’m married to my husband Al and mum to our trio of boys aged twelve, ten and seven.
In December 2020 we moved from the original Sandrock into our current home, a substantial Georgian Grade II listed property requiring a complete overhaul - our most extensive renovation project to date. We’ve recently received planning permission for renovations to start early next year - an exciting challenge and styling journey to say the least. This latest project will command a different approach to interior design and styling than the original Sandrock, so if you’d like to come along for the ride, I’ll be documenting our renovation journey on Instagram.
